The Chewed Tape Effects 'Junkdrive' will give you a similar result to sticking an extra preamp tube in your amplifier for more gain, thanks in no small part to it's 3 germanium clipping diodes.

Whether you want to crank the gain up for amp-like overdriven tones, or roll it down to just add a little bit of an edge to your clean tone, the Junkdrive gives you surprising versatility from a one-knob pedal.

The knob is a gain control, not volume - at lower settings it will simply add gain at unity level. Crank it up and you'll notice a little increase in volume as the gain increases, similar to what you would expect to get from turning the gain up on your amp.
